My goal is to modify this C424 without having to repaint the whole model. The most daunting part of this is the air filters. The prototype in 1989 had four filters, stacked 2×2 on each side of the long hood. There are technical reasons for these – I do not care what they were. No more than why the turbocharged in an RS-3 went from air cooled to water cooled. Don’t care, what do I have to do to make look right?
The molded air grills on the long hood extend out from the shell, and are relief into the shell. To remove them, I needed to curve the outside flush, then fill the relief in with putty. The resulting hood, once the paint is added, should look like the grill was never there. Then I will add the 2×2 filters later.
Did I say I found this daunting? One wrong nick, and more work I need to repair.

Now filler…

And finally sanding…

While the putty was out, I filled in the hole on the cab roof as the horn is to be located on the long hood roof.

And astute observers will note that the number is missing two digits. This engine will be numbered 4235, which matches the as-built fuel tank casting.
Touch up paint next, and then those filters.
Adios!
